Most of the people first think of fast food and snacks when eating while traveling. But, just because you’re not at home, it doesn’t mean you have to eat foods that will make you feel tired and bloated all the time. Healthy food should be your go-to choice while traveling because it keeps you energized, your muscles fueled and your recovery quick. Here are some tips to help you eat healthy on the road.
Choose where you stop
If you only stop at fast food joints your healthy food choices will be severely limited. Better make your stops at grocery stores that offer whole and healthy foods such as fruit, veggies and nuts, or seek for a supermarket with a salad bar. This way, you can quickly expand your healthy food choices and reduce the temptation to gorge on junk food.
Eat frequently, and in smaller amounts
Eating small amounts of food throughout the day will actually make your body burn calories faster. But, if you eat too many calories in one sitting they will probably be stored as fat. Also, overeating makes you sleepy and sluggish, and that’s not how you want to feel on your trip.
Avoid foods that make you feel bad
There are foods you crave but that always make your feel sick or bloated afterwards. You should avoid those foods, particularly when traveling. They will drain your energy, make you moody and could even ruin your trip.
Get that lean protein
If you can try to build your diet around lean protein foods, such as fish, seafood and chicken, instead of their fattier counterparts like beef and pork. The good news is that every new culture has some special and tasty ways of preparing those lean meats so there’s no way you’ll get bored.
Go easy on the booze
This one can be a tough one, especially for those who enjoy a good glass of wine or a beer. Of course, you don’t have to be stone cold sober, but you don’t have to drink every night either. You can also try that old trick with alternating water and alcohol. That will not only alleviate hangovers but also help control your calories. By all means, feel free to try some local booze, just be moderate.
Pack food so you’re not skipping meals
When traveling, we rarely have the chance to eat at regular intervals. If you skip meals, your body will respond as if it’s facing a starvation period, slowing down your metabolism and storing all calories for later. To stop that from happening, always pack some healthy snacks in your backpack or car. Some of the healthy snacks you can take with you are almonds, raw veggies and hummus, yoghurt, berries, fruit and even hard-boiled eggs. You can also always pack some replacement meals such as Optifast soups, shakes and desserts that are easy to prepare, and are perfect when you’re on the go.
Drink lots of water
Even though water isn’t technically food, it’s on the list because your body needs it to function properly. Water will flush toxins out of your system, keep your skin fresh and you will eat less. It will also help you get over your travel lag symptoms faster, make the sun easier to endure and reduce your junk-food cravings. Actually, many of our unhealthy food cravings can be easily stopped with a glass of cold, fresh water.
Don’t be too strict
Even though it’s important to eat healthy while traveling, don’t put yourself on some crazy diet that you know you can’t possibly stick to on the road. Most of the people are traveling to experience new things and enjoy themselves, so don’t stress out over food too much. Of course, you can indulge once in a while because moderate indulgence can also be a part of a healthy diet. As long as your diet is balanced, you will be fine.
As you can see, it’s not that hard to eat healthy while traveling. You’ll need a lot of energy for exploring all those amazing places you will visit, so make sure you eat quality and healthy food. There’s no way junk food and sugary sodas will provide you with enough nutrients. Make good choices, always have some food with you, drink plenty of water and you will be healthier than ever. Have fun on your travels!
